Back in January 2022, I wrote the following in a post entitled "The 14th and 15th Amendments."
"It would also seem to me that the 14th Amendment would effectively block Donald Trump from ever again running for any public office in America. He instigated an insurrection against our government, as the House Commission will soon show with undeniable evidence (and which I saw, along with many of us on TV, as vividly as some of us saw Jack Ruby shoot Lee Harvey Oswald in a Texas police basement in 1963 on national TV!). This probably won't lock Teflon Don up, but, according to this Amendment to our Constitution, should conclusively prevent him from ever seeking public office again. I realize the amendment was aimed at Southern secessionists at the time, but it does not limit it to them, opening it up to any future insurrectionists like Trump."
It's taken awhile but a group of Constitutional scholars has finally caught up to me, and put out a press release calling for exactly the same action to be taken against citizen Donald John Trump. Some Trumpsters still assert that the 14th Amendment only applies to the Confederacy and those high ranking officers and politicians who initiated the insurrection. But that is not true. The legal experts, including conservative retired Federal judge J. Michael Lutig, agree that the Amendment, as do all amendments to our Constitution, applies to circumstances now as much as they did when first enacted. You'd have to formally and legally annul an amendment to cancel it.
And, as was the case with Confederate generals and politicians, you don't need a court conviction to prove participation in an insurrection. With Trump, all you need is a video tape of his speech before the January 6th onslaught where he called for violence against Mike Pence and, knowing there were firearms in the audience, a march on the Congress to stop the Electoral College vote that was taking place that day.
Actually, any director of elections in any state can remove any candidate from the ballot, thereby preventing them from running for any public office, for such a violation of the 14th Amendment, in my understanding. Red state, blue state. Battleground state. Whatever. And once one state does this, other states can, and more than likely, will follow suit.
As our planet is currently enmeshed in a global climate emergency, we are also faced with a potential political emergency if Donald Trump is again elected President. Out of empathy, I will spare you the justification for that statement. Much of what I've written on such reasons needs no further embellishment. Trump is a menace to our country, our civilization, our humanity, and our planet. Period.
He will be stopped eventually, I believe, via the current indictments and court cases against him. But, because of his chronic delaying tactics over court dates, he must also be stopped politically via our clear Constitution. And the 14th Amendment, if applied as written, can do just that, and do that finally and definitively.
Please sign whatever petition, call whatever politician, write whatever letter to the editor, talk to whatever political influencer, donate whatever money is needed to make that happen, and make that happen before the Republican National Nominating Convention in the summer of next year.
Thanks. Sending thoughts of love and peace to all of you on this fair and beautiful planet.
