Whether you acknowledge what we did to Native Americans or what we did to Black Africans or what we did to Mexicans or what we did to Chinese or what we did to Japanese Americans or what we did to the Irish or what we did to Jews, or what we did to women, or what we did to the disabled, it all comes down to a deep seated, embedded, systemic, chronic, coordinated, institutional, inherent, rampant racism from the very start of the European intrusion to the blatant white supremacist practices of one of our major political parties today in 2021. I'm sure many who've seen the title of this post are no longer reading as the denial of that racism is so pervasive that most whites in this culture have a knee jerk reaction when anything that crosses their eyes about racism is automatically rejected as some liberal or Democrat or Socialist bullshit. For they are conditioned to think that if they just don't acknowledge the reality of racism in this country, it's just not there, never has been, never a problem, nothing to worry about, no need to change anything, nobody has suffered, nor is anyone suffering today. Problem solved. Let's go on with our lives as always. Nothing to see here.
As a long-time mental health counselor, this falls into the category of denial, repression, displacement, selective amnesia, memory loss, rationalization, and just plain lying to oneself, thus convincing oneself that a proven truth is false and always has been been false, even though historians and other social scientists verify it to be true. Governments have tried to modify history before, with varying degrees of success, but eventually the truth wins out. But in our case, we're finding that it takes time, lots of time, for the truth to overcome falsity. We also see that politics are behind the manipulation of truth, which usually means some effort to discredit democracy in an attempt to replace it with some authoritarian one-party rule, dictatorship, Stalinist communist, or fascist government. In the U.S. , presently, we are seeing exactly that effort by the Trump-dominated Republican Party, leaning heavily towards a one-party system which would then devolve into authoritarian rule which then devolves even further into fascism.
So, dear readers, we are therefore in the midst of a maelstrom of political upheaval in America, spelling an aggressive move by predominantly white, conservative America against a multi-cultural America that has become the majority, a majority made manifest by the 81 million people who voted for Joe Biden and against Donald Trump. Something very similar happened in Germany in the 1930s when a malevolent minority overcame the majority, leading to WWII and millions dying worldwide before the Axis powers could be stopped.
Can anything be done to reverse this caustic and violent turn to the extreme right? The main strategy now must be to pass the voting rights legislation that has been passed by the House, but is currently stalled in the Senate by Trump-conservative Republicans. With the 2022 election close at hand, this must be primary for if the Republicans take back control of either branch of Congress, it will be the first crucial rung in their ladder back to the Presidency and total control of Congress in 2024. They will then have in place the infrastructure to erect a country of essentially one party rule--their party. If that happens, dear reader, you can kiss democracy, and all that it brings you, goodbye.
That is why the two voting rights bills must pass by any means possible. The Supreme Court is now so loaded in the direction of Trump conservatism, it will no longer protect the basic structures that ensure democracy survives and thrives. So whether the filibuster be suspended for these bills in particular or some other scheme can be devised by the Senate leadership, these bills must be passed and signed by the President Biden as soon as possible, thereby negating and deleting the antagonist suppressive voting and vote counting structure bills that some 17 Republican-dominated state legislatures have already signed into law, essentially spawned by the Big Lie which the criminal Trump has foisted on our country.
The future of our democracy is at stake, which puts the future of this great country, as we know it, at risk. What can you do? You know the drill. Call or write your legislators. Write letters to the editor of your local papers. Send contributions to Democrats who are fighting to strengthen their majorities in both houses of Congress. And tell them to pass these two voting bills by any means possible. Thank you.
